Since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, I thought it would be fun to think back on the best love stories that have been captured in novels, at least according to me. Whether you have found your true love, are still searching, or having finally decided true love doesn’t really exist, these novels are sure to pull at your heart. In no particular order:

1. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks – Who hasn’t dreamt of a love like this? And the ending? Tear my heart out Mr. Sparks, go ahead, do it again. Even the movie makes me cry, and if I pass it while searching for something I MUST stop and watch it. Sigh. Let’s just go ahead and add A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle for those days when you really feel hopeless.

2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – Another fabulous time travel novel with Claire (what is with Claire’s in time travel novels?) who is torn between her husband and lover, separated by a century.

3. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger – The combination of time travel and passion, along with the thought of a love strong enough to make Claire wait her entire life for just one more moment together with Henry, never gets old.

4. Love In The Time Of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez – A 50 year love triangle between two young lovers Fermina and Florentino, and Fermina’s forced marriage to Juvenal. Florentino’s 622 affairs and ensuing declaration of love at Juvenal’s funeral make you wonder if love is strong or extremely weak.

5. Love Story by Erich Segal – Unfortunately Mr. Segal died Jan 2010, but not before touching millions of lives with Love Story, followed by the much adored film telling the story of Oliver and Jenny who are destined for a short life together.

6. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte – Obsessive, dark love doesn’t get better than Wuthering Heights. The read can be daunting, especially the beginning, but it’s worth it if you haven’t yet struggled through this classic.

7. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare – I don’t believe I loved Romeo and Juliet when I had to read it in school, nor did many of my peers. This is one of those stories that must be included in any love story list, but more importantly, it’s one of those stories you should read again as an adult to fully appreciate it, without having to worry about writing a paper.

8. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – One of the best battle of the sexes ever written. Witty, intelligent, comedic and romantic all at the same time.

I am about to begin to attempt to read Wuthering Heights again!
    I never liked it.
I much preferred Jane Eyre, another love story, which actually deserved the big fuss that is normally given to Wuthering Heights.
Also wanted to comment about how I loved Romeo and Juliet in school and could never figure out why people couldn’t understand it.

I strongly recommend Evermore by Alyson Noel. I completely love it. It’s a Series, but still amazing. Adult Fiction though, definitely. I’m on the second book, & nothing truly bad has happened yet, but I have the slightest feeling it will. It’s really called the Immortals (YES, it’s that kind. But nothing like the Twilight Saga, trust me) but I call it by their names, don’t know why. If you want to see the summary’s online, here’s the link to the website. http://www.ImmortalsSeries.com Hope You Love it. & I really want to hear what you say, so e-mail me @ DazzleMeSparkle@hotmail.com with YOUR opinions. Thanks!

Ernessa, I definitely agree Jane Eyre can get lost on the shuffle, they are both great books. Wuthering Heights is one of those you either love or hate I think.

I think Romeo and Juliet depended on how you were introduced to it and the teaching style, unfortunately a bad teacher can make enjoyable things seem like death.

Kiley – I’ll have to look into that series! Thanks for recommending it!

You and I have a lot of overlap in our lists. Wuthering Heights was tragically romantic. I love Audrey Niffenegger, Jane Austen and Diana Gabaldon. Marion Zimmer Bradley also has a couple of epic love stories interwoven into her fantasy novels.
